Who are the CRB?
As a Home Office executive agency, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) offers a disclosure service to organisations and employers enabling them to access criminal record information.
Real Gap is a CRB ‘umbrella body', which enables us to do CRB checks for you, as individuals are unable to do a check on themselves.
All of the information that is disclosed by the check will be used properly and handled fairly, as set out by the CRB Code of Practice.
From an enhanced check we will gain the following information:
- Information on the Police National Computer, which includes current and spent convictions, reprimands, cautions and warnings (in England, Wales, Scotland & some Northern Ireland)
- Relevant and proportional information (including non - conviction) held by the local police forces.
- The check will also access information from:
Protection of Children Act List
Protection of Vulnerable Adults List
The information held under Section 142 of the Education Act 2002

Why you have to have a Criminal Record Check?
It is only people who sign up for a community volunteer project who need to have a CRB check. Because we send such a large number of volunteers to projects that involve them working closely with both children and vulnerable adults, we feel that it is our ethical responsibility to protect the people we are helping from anyone who is deemed to be unsuitable.
So, before they are able to leave for a project, anyone who is volunteering with Real Gap and intends to work with children and vulnerable adults in any respect (teaching/ orphanage/community development/sports etc) will need to be subject to an enhanced CRB check.
What is the process?
If you are required to have a CRB check for your chosen project, we will send you a form, which you will need to fill out and return to us. We will send it on to the CRB having checked it through and countersigned it on your behalf. There is no charge for this process.
The CRB will issue two copies of the disclosure, one of which will be sent to us at Real Gap and the other will be sent to you.
If you have a criminal conviction but it is not relevant to the project work that you wish to carry out, then you are protected by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Real Gap sticks closely to guidance information that is set out on this issue by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the CRB.
What happens if I'm not approved?
If you are found to have a conviction that is relevant to the volunteer work that you wish to partake in, Real reserves the right to cancel your placement. In this instance, our cancellation terms and conditions will apply, please see our: Terms-and-Conditions
We also reserve the right to delay or postpone your programme start date until the Criminal Record check has been complete and are not responsible for delays in the process or any costs incurred.
